The Importance of the CMDB (H/W and S/W Assets) as it Pertains to Properly Implementing the Critical Security Controls to Protect Your Company

By Matt Laba

This discussion will focus on the CIS top 20 Critical Security Controls (CSCs) and how critical getting the first two controls (Hardware and Software Assets) right are, and the related importance of the CMDB.

These two controls have a ripple-down effect on establishing the remaining CSCs, and this session will discuss all aspects of properly implementing these, and how that is accomplished.

Control 1: Inventory of authorized and unauthorized devices.
Control 2: Inventory of authorized and unauthorized software.

A pragmatic approach to assets in both the ICS/SCADA Cybersecurity world and the Corporate IS Cybersecurity world will be discussed at a high level.

Insights will include asset info used for security monitoring/SIEM, vulnerability management, and other security areas.

About The Speaker:

Matt has been in the IT industry for 32 years in various roles and is a seasoned IT professional. After getting his Computer Science degree at the University of Waterloo in the early 1980s, he started his career off as a Programmer and then moved on to Systems Analyst and DBA roles covering the first 5 years of his career. After that, he performed a variety of architect roles (Infrastructure, Web, Security, Network, Application, Database) as well as numerous Project Manager roles for the next 18 years. He took a break from IT and taught the Computer Science program at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook, BC for 3 years. Returning to Calgary, he moved on to management – where he was Manager, Enterprise Architecture for 3 years at AltaLink, and is currently GM, IS Operations, Security and Service Management for the past 3 years at Gibson Energy.

Matt is a very passionate and focused leader who is dedicated and driven to help organizations implement leading edge technologies to best enable productivity for the end users. This includes moving to the cloud (Microsoft’s Office 365), implementing mobility (BYOD, Mobile Device Management), going to Azure (for various systems) etc - fully supporting the business with an any device, anytime, anywhere strategy!

Of course, this comes with its challenges from a security and risk perspective – and thus where the other side of his expertise and passion comes in. Providing these opportunities to the business but ensuring the proper security controls/tools/processes/people are in place in order to reduce the corporate risk, and protect the company’s assets, is an area where he is deep in the heart of right now with two major security initiatives at Gibsons – and loving every bit of the challenge.

Outside of work, Matt loves sports (skiing, hiking, football, volleyball, fishing, etc) and travelling, enjoys being with his two adult kids, his granddaughter, and his two dogs.

We look forward to seeing you there!
